Broadus basketball played at Plevna on Friday, and hosted Terry on Saturday. The Terry game proved to be some of the more exciting games of the season, as both Broadus teams battled the tenacious Terriers.
Boys
At Friday against Plevna, Broadus maintained a close game throughout the first three quarters (down as little as 2 points for minutes of the third quarter) before finding themselves in foul trouble in the fourth, where Plevna was able to pull ahead to secure a win, 66-40. The Hawks' 32 turnovers led to the loss, while Plevna's 0.95 points per possession helped the Wildcats on the offensive side of the game.
Jayce Schroeder led the Hawk scoring drive with 13 points.
Broadus came away from Plevna bashed and bruised, with Junior Hawk Guard Baylor Kuhbacher out with a knee injury, and Freshman Forward Brock Gali out with an ankle injury.
Those injuries caused a change in starters for the game on Saturday, as Broadus hosted conference leading Terry. The Terry game would also prove to be one of Broadus' best played games of the year, according to Coach Benson.
"We slowed down the pace, and performed well," Benson provided info on the game.
Broadus led throughout the first quarter, but Terry came back big time in the 2nd quarter to outscore the Hawks 20-8 and take the lead. Broadus came back again to take the lead three separate times in the second half, but couldn't seal the deal as the Hawks lost by 3 points, 44-47.
A key to the close game was the rebounding ability of the Hawks, as they out-rebounded Terry on the defensive end 19 to 7, and also led in offensive boards 14-13. Meanwhile, Terry's 17 steals, and 30 turnovers from Broadus helped the Terriers to notch another win.
Coach Benson noted that Sean Oylear stepped into the role of point guard and performed quite well against Terry, with five assists in the game.
Landyn Merwin, Freshman Forward, led the Hawks in scoring against Terry with 13 points.
The Hawks are now 1-4 in conference and 5th overall out of six teams. The Hawks take on Ekalaka this Saturday, a team which sits at 3-2 in conference. In their first meeting of the year, Broadus battled to overtime before finally succumbing to the Bulldog onslaught, so the Hawks have shown they are able to at Ekalaka's level.
The single game this weekend also means additional recovery time for the injured Hawk players, before they go into their final two week stretch of games before tournaments.
Girls
The Lady Hawks got off to a slow start against Plevna, only scoring two points in the first quarter, while Plevna racked up 7. Broadus came back hard in the second quarter to take the lead, and with a big second and third quarter sealed the win, 40-34.
Kassie Hagedorn, 5'6" Sophomore Forward, had a big night in Plevna as she scored 12 points to lead the team in scoring.
Broadus Head Coach Jamie Harper noted that Plevna has improved significantly since years past, especially defensively, and one goal Broadus had during the win was to do their best to shut down Plevna's three point shooter, #20, which they accomplished by limiting the player to 7 points and one three point shot.
On Saturday against Terry, Broadus came out hot, at one point leading 33-16 in the second quarter. Terry, a team which has been on top of the standings all season, then began to chip away at the lead, led by Kiara Chaska's three point shooting in the second half.
With some last minute heroics, Terry tied the game and sent it into overtime, where the teams tied in the first overtime quarter with 5 a piece, making for a second overtime. In that sixth quarter of play, Terry took the lead to win by four points, 67-63.
Coach Harper commented on the game: "Though we didn't come away with the win, the girls played very hard. I'm very proud of the effort they put out against Terry."
The 63 point game would prove to be Broadus' highest scoring game of the year, and even without the extra quarters, the 53 points scored during the first four quarters would be Broadus' biggest offensive game of the year.
The Lady Hawks can come away from the game with their heads held high, in the knowledge that the effort put forth against Terry would have likely beaten most other teams in the conference.
The Lady Hawks are now 3-2 in conference play, and 8-5 overall. They will host Ekalaka on Saturday. In their first meeting, Broadus lost 32-56.
Harper tells us that this time around, the Lady Hawks will have a new look to show Ekalaka. With the confidence gained through added experience, fans are sure to be in for a good game.
