The Lady Hawks went 1-1 in weekend basketball action; the team now has a record of 5-4 overall. On Friday, Broadus hosted their first home game of the season against Roberts, a team which Broadus had previously bested in Roberts the weekend before.
The Lady Hawks went out to an early lead, finishing the first quarter up 8-2; continued to 17-8 at the half, then scored 16 to Robert's 8 points in the third. Roberts scored 12 in the 4th quarter, but Broadus made up for that with 14. Final score: Broadus 47, Roberts 28.
A big part of the win this time around was Junior Lady Hawk Gracey Bradley's excellent defense against Roberts' TJ Chirrick. In the first meeting, Chirrick put up 18 points, while this time around Bradley's defense against Chirrick limited her to 5 points. Gracey would also add 12 points on offense, including shooting 3 of 6 from beyond the arc, as well as 4 steals and 7 rebounds.
On Saturday versus Melstone, the Lady Hawks had a tough go, dropping behind 2-21 after the first quarter. Broadus would put up 15 points overall in the game, as Melstone laid down 61 points.
Lady Hawk Coach Jamie Harper, when we spoke to her Monday, commented that there was a least one bright spot in the loss, as the Lady Hawk press worked better in this game than in the meeting in Melstone.
The Lady Hawks will now host Wibaux this Friday. Wibaux is currently 1-5 overall. The Lady Hawks travel to Jordan on Saturday to face the ever-scrappy Lady Mustangs. Jordan is currently 3-5 overall. That game looks to be the most competitive of the weekend, and should give Broadus a bead on how they are looking against their conference competition as the teams all head into the portion of the season where conference games are the order of the day.
Boys
The Broadus Hawks have had a tough go this season, with the young team of two seniors, two juniors, a sophomore, and 3 freshmen taking the court each weekend. Broadus went into the weekend with an 0-7 record, and left the weekend at 0-9, though with a lesson learned – if Broadus puts together four quarters of play and doesn't drop one, they will continue to improve.
Case in point - on Friday, Roberts jumped out to a 10 point lead in the first quarter, going up 18-8. Throughout the next three quarters, Broadus kept up well with Roberts, even outscoring the Rockets 21-17 in the fourth quarter. Nonetheless, that 10 point difference in the first quarter made the difference, as Broadus lost by 10 points, 55-65.
Roberts also made more free throws than Broadus shot in total – a stat which often means a win for the team with more shots.
Despite these differences, overall when looking at stats, Broadus played right with Roberts, outside of that first quarter.
Zach Jones led the Hawks in scoring with 16 points in the team's home debut, while Jayce Schroeder had 10.
On Saturday against Melstone, Broadus started out close, with a tied game in the first quarter, and were tied until just before the half. Melstone switched up their defense in the locker room, and came out with a zone look that Broadus had difficulty countering – meaning the Hawks once again had a tough quarter of play, scoring 0 points in that quarter to Melstone's 22. Final score – Broadus 33, Melstone 58.
Coach Frank Benson noted that Logan Capp had a great weekend of play, as his minutes on the court were amongst the best performances Broadus showed on the weekend, even when his stat-line did not stand out amongst his teammates.
Benson commented that his team is learning more every game and working towards improvement. That learning and improvement will now be put to the test as conference games are the main course on the menu. Broadus played Ekalaka to overtime in the only conference game thus far in the season, a team which features a 7-1 overall record. Broadus hosts the Wibaux Longhorns this Friday. Wibaux has a 3-3 overall record. Jordan, whom the Hawks play Saturday, sit at a 2-6 record.
