At the November Montana High School Association meeting, a divisional realignment of class C teams took place. The realignment, several years in the making, was meant to balance out teams amongst divisions as well as across sports, and will go into effect in the 2025-26 school year.
The new alignment places teams into similar divisions across basketball, volleyball, and track. Football in Class C does not follow the same guidelines, due to the differentiation between 8 man and 6 man conferences, and sports such as golf, cross country, and wrestling have different setups, often because of no district tournaments or due to playing Class C and B together.
Broadus Activities Director Mike Richards was a key player in the realignment, first introducing the changes in 2023, and then getting approval for the changes this fall.
How will these changes look for Broadus?
In basketball, Broadus will play divisional tournaments against the east, instead of the south.
Depending on how the conferences are aligned within the division (whether the East goes to a 2 or 3 district division), the 4C basketball district, of which Broadus is currently a member, may remain quite similar to previous years. The 4C features teams including Jordan, Ekalaka, Broadus, Plevna, Terry, and Wibaux.
In volleyball and track, differences would include Forsyth and Northern Cheyenne moving to the Southern Division.
Other notable changes throughout the state include the addition of teams around the Judith Basin, as well as White Sulphur Springs, to the Southern Division, as they move away from the North (or West, in the case of WSS).
How the changes may affect tournament locations is still up in the air, and will be determined over the winter, with tournament locations and next year’s basketball schedule looking to be finalized by the basketball districts in February of 2025. Miles City may still serve as a site for districts, but one certainty is that basketball divisional tournaments for Broadus will no longer be played in Lockwood or Laurel, instead we will head north. Whether those tournaments are held in Miles City, Glendive, Sidney, or parts beyond will be determined this winter.
