The Hawks will move from 8 man football to 6 man football in the 2025 season, with the move approved by the Montana State High School Association at their November 25th meeting.
The move comes after decisions were made earlier this year in local school board meetings, due to limited player numbers in Broadus.
6 man football carries a number of different rules compared to 8 or 11 man football, and final scores often look more like basketball scores than the football scores of 11 man – for instance, in the 6 man state championship this season, Box Elder beat Bridger by a score of 84-56.
The field is 80 yards long by 40 yards wide, as in 8 man.
Length of quarters is 10 minutes, instead of 12.
Field goals count for 4 points. In a reversal from more populated football models, a kick attempt after a touchdown counts for 2 points, while a play from scrimmage counts for 1 point.
One major difference is that 15 yards is needed instead of 10 for a first down. On offense, all players are eligible to receive a pass, even the center.
Another difference on offense is the player to whom the ball is snapped cannot cross the line of scrimmage. Thus teams planning to pass will often hike the ball to a running back, who hands the ball to the quarterback.
Due to changes in classification of some other schools, the division in which Broadus will play is still up in the air, and will likely take place at the MHSA Annual meeting in January. Broadus may play in the Southern Division, or the Eastern, which is where teams such as Jordan and Terry currently play.
