The Lady Hawks finished off their volleyball season at the divisional tournament in Sidney last Friday, capping off a season that saw the team winning second at two early season tournaments (at Belle Fourche and Bridger), as well as second in the district tournament.
The Divisional Tournament got underway Thursday against North Country, a team comprised of students from Saco, Whitewater, and Hinsdale, northeast of Malta.
Broadus came out hot against the Lady Mavericks and won the first set 25-22, but North Country had built up some momentum in the latter stages of the first set and that carried over to the second and third set, which saw the Lady Hawks losing 21-25 and 17-25. In the fourth set, Broadus performed well to win 25-15 and force a 5th set. In the fifth set, Broadus had a difficult time putting the ball down to score, and with little room for error in the fifth set the Lady Hawks found themselves with a 9-15 loss and looking at a more difficult road forward in the tournament.
On Friday, Broadus played Jordan, a team which they Broadus was 2-1 against so far this season, beating Jordan in three straight sets at Districts. This time around, Broadus kept the scores close for the first three sets, losing the first 23-25 and reversing that score to win the second. In the third, Broadus fell 21-25 and faced elimination in the fourth set, as the team seemed to lose their composure to fall 6-25, ending the match and their season.
Jordan would go on to lose to Bainville, and North Country would eventually lose to Circle 3-0 in the championship, with those two teams moving on to state.
Broadus finishes the season losing two seniors – Kiara Kelly and Maddie Zimmer, both players who added greatly to the Lady Hawks' success during their playing careers.
Coach Monica Smith told us that overall she is proud of how far the team advanced throughout the season – going from a team that looked pretty rough on the court during their first matches of the season to a well oiled machine by the final tournaments of the season.
"The team made huge strides forward," she mentioned. "I'm proud of their progress."
Smith wanted to thank her assistant coaches – Raevyn Slovek and Melissa Billing, for all the effort they put in to help Monica and the team during the season. She also wanted to thank everyone who helped keep the games running smoothly, and the parents and fans who were supportive all season long.
The team will look to compete in tournaments next summer, prior to the 2025 season.
