My brother and I grew up with parents who were very successful and it was always encouraged or implied that we should strive to excel at whatever we do. This was true for how my father lived his life. Watching my father decline mentally and losing the ability to perform simple tasks has been difficult for me, but extremely frustrating for someone who always strived for perfection.
As parents and educators, we should inspire our students to challenge themselves academically and socially. We should also encourage youth to participate in a variety of extra-curricular activities and perform to the best of their ability. Often students become frustrated and want to quit when they are academically challenged or do not perform to their athletic expectations. All of us want to be the “best” but truthfully only one can be.
Encourage youth to broaden their horizons, explore new pathways, and give it their finest effort. I now realize my parents desired for me to be successful, but more importantly they wanted me to understand, “Your effort is as important as the result.”
