Lady Hawks Beat Forsyth Handily, Suffer Tough Loss At Jordan

In the first meeting of the season against Forsyth, the Lady Hawk volleyball squad had a challenging time against their Rosebud County rivals, with the teams trading blows and the match going to five sets and Broadus coming back to win in the fifth set by the skin of their teeth.

The second time around, last Thursday in Forsyth, the Lady Hawks were much more focused, according to Head Volleyball Coach Monica Smith. That increase in focus helped lock in the team's defense and offense, and helped the Lady Hawks to mow down the Lady Dogies in three sets, winning 25-19, 25-19, and 25-20. Maddie Zimmer led the team in kills, with 13. Gracie Gali led in assists, with 22. Macyn McDowell led in digs, with 14. Gracey Bradley had 4 aces, and Kassie Hagedorn had 3 blocks.

Over the weekend Broadus traveled to Jordan to face an always scrappy team in the Lady Mustangs, which Broadus had not yet seen this season. The Lady Hawks seemed to experience some communication issues and lacked consistency throughout the match, according to Smith. Broadus won the first set 25-23, but fell behind to lose 12-25 in the second, and continued their issues in the third and fourth, losing 18-25 and 20-25.

The lack of consistency on a match to match basis has been an issue all season long for the young team, and is something Coach Smith is working to remedy as the team heads into their last regular season weekend.

In speaking with Coach Smith, she told us she had emphasized to the team that when things aren't going their way, to concentrate on the things they have control over – their energy, their communication, and how hard they work. "When you make the choice to control put into action those things you can control, you'll start to see positive results."

Those points are also a good lesson outside of the volleyball court – controlling the things you are able, even if life isn't going the way you had planned.

The Lady Hawks will look to put those tasks to work on Thursday night, as they host Jordan.

"We just need to take care of our side of the net," Smith noted.

The final regular season match will come against Terry, a team which Broadus also has not played this season, and are reportedly improved from last season, meaning Broadus finishes their regular season with competitive teams in which to test their mettle before tournaments.

Next week Broadus will play at the District Tournament, in Glendive from Halloween to November 2nd. Four teams will advance to Divisionals, November 7-9 in Sidney.
