Lady Hawks Play Tough Matches On The Road, Win At Home

Lady Hawk volleyball made a special trip to Miles City last week, playing a match against Custer/Hysham at the Miles Community College gym, then staying to watch the MCC Lady Pioneers take on Bismarck State College.

The Lady Hawks went a full 5 sets against Custer/Hysham, winning the first handily, but losing the initiative on subsequent sets with errors in communication between teammates, which all went to additional points to determine a winner (in all, the winning team in each set combined for a total of 9 additional points over the normal 25 points to win). In the fifth and final set, Broadus fell behind to lose 9-15.

"We definitely found some things we need to work on," Broadus Coach Monica Smith told us about the match against the Lady Rebels. "We also found that things we have been working on [prior to the match] have improved."

Interestingly enough, as Broadus watched MCC play later in the evening, those communication errors were evident even on a college level team, as MCC went up 2-0 then fell behind to lose, in part due to similar communication errors.

On Friday, Broadus traveled to Circle, an undefeated, experienced team that maintained the majority of their players from last season. Circle managed to take the Lady Hawks down in four sets.

Despite the loss, Smith noted a distinct improvement in the team from their losses at Glendive in the opening weekend of the season, especially with pushing the match to four sets.

With two matches on the books for the week which each involved late night returns to Broadus (coming home at around midnight Tuesday, and around 1 AM Friday), the Lady Hawks were a tired bunch for their match against Plevna on Saturday.

Despite operating on minimal sleep, Broadus allowed only 25 total points from Plevna in the 3 set match, winning handily 25-5, 25-5, and 25-10.

This week Broadus will host Northern Cheyenne on Thursday, with only a varsity match at 5 PM. Then it's on to the Belle Fourche Tournament on Saturday, providing Broadus with a look at teams from outside the Montana Class C realm.
