Broadus XC Team Puts In The Miles

The Broadus cross country team ran in their first competition of the season last Friday at the Hardin Invitational. That course is near Crow Agency, and is a challenging run featuring a steep hill and open terrain with little shade, making for a tough run when the temperature climbs to around 90 degrees, as it did the day of the competition.

Returning coach Ashley Emmons had four runners competing in the meet, including returning racers Sean and Christian Oylear and Addison Draine, along with Reece Emmons, who ran her first ever 5,000 meter race at the Hardin Invitational. Despite the tough running venue, both Sean and Christian turned in faster times than last year, and Addison Draine was close to her time last season at the Hardin Meet.

In the men’s varsity, Christian ran a 20:29 for 28th place, and Sean ran a 21:15 for 42nd. In the women’s JV, Reece placed 34th with a 29:14, and Addison 52nd with a 31:47.

This Thursday the team (with some potential additions to the roster), will run in Belle Fourche, at the Country Club located on the south end of town on the way to Spearfish.

“It’s going to be a good year,” Emmons commented on the team, as we spoke to her Monday. “They’re healthy and motivated for the season.”
