The Lady Hawk volleyball team took to the court in the first trial of the season in Glendive on Saturday, for a tournament against a number of Eastern Montana teams.
Monica Smith returns as head coach of the team, along with assistant coaches Raevyn Slovek and Missy Billing.
The team comes off a historic season in which Broadus took second at state in 2023, and now look towards the future after multiple seniors departed the team last season.
This season the team has 10 players on the roster, 6 of whom have varsity experience from last year.
We spoke to Coach Smith on Monday, who indicated that the team-members have been learning their new roles on the court during practice already this season.
At Glendive, the team put that practice knowledge to the test, beginning in pool play against Plentywood, which they beat in 2 games, then lost to Jordan in 2, split a game a piece with Miles City’s JV, and lost one set to Bainville.
After the loss, Smith had a chat with the team about “controlling what they can control,” as she described the conversation, and the team seemed to take that advice to heart, as in the first bracket play match Broadus beat Bainville, this time in two. They then played Jordan, splitting games with the conference rivals.
“It was a good starting off point,” Smith told us. “We found some things we’re been doing well, as well as some things we need to work on.” She went on to comment that the long day of matches provides good practice for tournament season. That experience can come in handy – for example, last season at state, Broadus played three matches in a day.
The Lady Hawks’ next matches come on Friday, as they travel to Savage, and return home to host Wibaux on Saturday.
