Broadus VFD  Responds To More Fires

Over the past week the Broadus VFD has responded to several area fires.

On August 27th, a 42 acre fire started along Highway 212, around 8 miles east of Ashland. The cause was from a suspected cigarette or similar device from the road.

That same day, a lightning caused fire from a storm the previous night occurred in the cottonwood trees along the Little Powder, around 8 miles SE of Broadus. That fire burned 6.6 acres.

On August 30th, a fire caused by a backfiring engine burned 86.6 acres, 33 miles southwest of Broadus. The Highline Fire, as it was known, burned up a stack of bales and damaged a set of corrals in the process.

On September 1st, locals responded to the Silver Spoon Fire in Northern Campbell County, Wyoming on a mutual aid. This fire started along Bitter Creek (SE of Moorhead) and driven by high winds and hot temperatures, burned northwest towards the Montana line, eerily reminiscent of the Remington Fire from August. Firefighters quickly took care of the blaze, which burned 1,721 acres and to within around a mile of the Montana border. The fire was under the management of the SW Team 5 Complex Incident Management Team, which had control of the other large area fire. That fire was listed at $850,000 cost to date to fight on Tuesday.

The damage from the Remington Fire was coming into better scope this week, as 24 structures are now listed as lost in the blaze. That fire was listed with a cost of 3.8 million dollars to extinguish. The Constitution Fire, north of Gillette, was listed at 2 million, the Flat Rock Fire west of Gillette at 2.4 million, and the House Draw Fire, east of Buffalo, at 5.5 million.
