Big Sky, Big Leadership Returns to Power River County

By Jackie Beardsley

MSU Extension Powder River County, the Powder River Area Economic Development Council and Powder River Chamber of Commerce & Ag are excited to invite you to be a participant in our upcoming leadership series. You’ll have the opportunity to build leadership through connection for all areas of your life, whether work, organizations, or your personal life. Participants will develop skills related to problem solving, working with groups, and dealing with conflict. You may learn more about yourself and how you lead, and about the inner workings of our community. According to past participant, Kyle Copelan, “Big Sky, Big Leadership has helped me be a better leader for my employees here at my business. I have always found people to be the most important part, but BSBL opened my eyes on how to lead those people.”

Big Sky Big Leadership is a series made of three major components. The first is skill building and each class will have a leadership topic including Real Colors- understanding personalities, effective meetings, working among different generations and building emotional intelligence. The second component is a community-based experience. This experience is designed to build understanding of the community we live, work and play in and the institutions, resources and strengths within it. Lastly a community project is planned, implemented, and evaluated by participants to benefit the community. “The spirit of community is alive and well here and that is why people are moving back, that is why people are excited to be right where they are at,” shares 2022 and 2024 steering committee leader Melissa Billing.

You may have seen the recently completed face lift on the old Texaco filling station at the stoplight corner, this face lift was a part of the 2022 participants group project. As a result of the 2022 Big Sky, Big Leadership, participants revived the Powder River Area Economic Development Council. The PRAEDC has been hard at work over the last year applying and receiving both a Montana Main Street Grant at around $30,000 and a Pilot Tourism Grant potentially 2.5 million over five years. These grants are designed to support the already great things happening in our community.

Classes will be held the third Monday of the month September-January 9:00 AM -3:00 PM. Cost is $150, pre-registration is required, meals and handbook provided. Registration is due September 9, 2024. For more information and to register call the MSU Extension Powder River County Office at 406-436-2424.
