A semi truck burst into flames and burned to the ground along Highway 212 west of Epsie last Thursday, August 15th, after colliding with another truck. The accident was reported at 8:55 AM, and reportedly involved an east bound truck crossing the centerline into oncoming traffic. A truck in the westbound lane moved into the opposing lane, and both trucks contacted on their passenger sides.
The eastbound truck careened off the north side of the highway, with the driver sustaining injuries but able to exit the cab before it burst into flames. The cab of the truck burned nearly to the ground, with only a burned out husk remaining. The engine was still somewhat visible, as was the cow catcher grille guard, with the rest melted or burned beyond ready recognition. The box trailer of the truck, which was heavily damaged, was partially filled with new, unfolded cardboard boxes. Broadus Fire Chief Raymond Ragsdale told us these boxes were difficult to extinguish. The fire caused by the wreck caused a small roadside fire, which was quickly extinguished due to the Broadus VFD, as well as the quick response of local ranchers
The other truck was also heavily damaged on the passenger side, but the driver was reportedly alright. A third vehicle – a pickup with a trailer, left the road during the incident but was not heavily damaged.
The driver of the burned truck was taken to medical care with minor injuries.
