The Powder River County Fair is coming right up; July 25th-27th. The theme is “4-H: Making Our Best Better”; we hope to see the best of Powder River County Fair entries in both open class and the 4-H contests. Contact the Extension Office by July 22nd to enter a booth in the competition for the best decorated theme booth. Youth and adult categories sponsored by the Fairboard.
Tuesday, July 23rd kicks off the fair with 4-H Interview Judging for indoor exhibits. The 4-H teens and Fairboard will be working to set the barn up for the livestock arriving Thursday.
Thursday at 9:00 AM the 4-H Horse Show judging will begin. Muddy Pig Wrestling contest will end the day’s events at 6:00 pm. Support our fair entertainment events by buying a pig wrestling team. Charlee Kuhbacher will calcutta the teams off at 5:30.
Friday is a full day starting with the 4-H Swine Show at 9:00. All open class exhibits need to be in place by 9:00 for judging. Enjoy Laser Tag and other exciting activities set up on the basketball courts at Cottonwood Park, opening 10:00 am on Friday and Saturday. Also starting at 10:00 is the Watermelon Eating Contest, join to see if you are the fastest watermelon devourer in this lively competition. Open to adults and kids under the tent next to the Community Center.
Are you a pie enthusiast, baker or sampler? Don't miss the Pie Making Contest at the Community Center. Bring your best cream, custard, fruit, or savory pie by noon on Friday for judging. While the judges deliberate, enjoy some delightful music under the tent.
The cutest part of the animal shows will be at 1:00 on Friday when the youngsters bring their bum calves, goats, & lambs to town. At 1:00 at the community center, Powder River-Carter County Farm Bureau will be hosting Bingo. The 4-H Sheep, Goat, Dairy, & Alpaca show will follow the bum show. At 3:00 the 4-H’ers will be showing their rabbits & poultry.
The Powder River County Ranch Rodeo, organized by Jesse Fleming, will be Friday at 4:00. Don’t miss the calcutta of the teams starting at 3:30. This year’s ranch rodeo is dedicated to Slug Mills & Jim Wilson, two great men that supported many events in Powder River County. After the excitement of the ranch rodeo, unwind with a FREE concert by Tris Munsick and the Innocents. Bring your lawn chair and settle under the big shade tree between the Community Center and Arena for a memorable evening of music and community spirit.
Start your Saturday morning with the 4-H Beef Show at 9:00. Head over to witness the hard work and skill these exhibitors bring to the show arena. The annual Powder River Ranch Horse Versatility Show will be held on Saturday, beginning at 9:30. Bring those ranch horses to town to claim “bragging rights”- everyone has at least one horse they are proud of!
Beginning at 11 am, kids ages 4-12 can find Money in the Straw. The annual Fireman’s BBQ will take place at noon along with music under the tent. At 1:00 join our top showmanship competitors as they test their showmanship skills across species in the 4-H Round Robin competition. An ice cream eating contest is slated for 1 pm under the tent. The Powder River-Carter County Farm Bureau will be calling BINGO again at 2:00 at the Community Center. Make your way to the show ring at 3:00 for the 4-H Awards Ceremony and Fairbook dedication to Randy & Katie Ward. Celebrate the achievements of participants and honor the dedication of those who contribute to making the fair a success.
Support local youth and agriculture at the 4-H Livestock Auction starting at 4:00. Bid on quality livestock raised by 4-H members, knowing your support helps fund their futures. End your day on a high note with a “fair finale” featuring live music by the Barstool Cowboys.
