Track Team Races At Divisionals

Conditions in Laurel were sunny and breezy with temps in the 60s last Thursday for the Southern C Divisional Track Meet – conditions just perfect for a meet, according to Head Track Coach Faith Dyrud. The competition at Divisional level becomes truly challenging for many of the athletes, as the field is narrowed and only the top competition finds their way to the meet. Despite the challenge, Broadus tracksters rose to the level of competition, making the podium in a number of events. Of particular note is the 2 mile (3200 meter) race, which saw Broadus take 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, with Thomas Oylear, Josh Rasmussen, and Sean Oylear holding down those spots. Thomas also won the 800 and 1600, while hurdler Matt Hansen won the 110 and 300. For the girls, Mia Mader placed 1st in the 100, while Zeason Schaffer placed 1st in the long jump and high jump.

The boys won first in the division as a team, totaling 137 points to beat second place Harlowton/Ryegate/Judith Gap, which scored 129 points. Melstone took third, with 63.5 points.

For the girls, Roberts won the event as a team with 108 points. Broadus tied with Jordan in 4th, with 57 points.

Broadus Activities Director Mike Richards informed us that the boys also won the Southern C Divisional a decade ago, in 2014.

All three relay teams (two boys teams, and the 4x100 girls) had "personal records" at the Divisional tourney, while several individuals turned in PRs, or near PRs.

Dyrud noted that even though some of the team did not place within the top 6 to go on to state, those PRs showed that they had performed to their potential and finished their season on a high note.

"I'm proud of the kids – they worked hard and really did well," she said, speaking of the performances in Laurel.

Qualifying for state is Jaxon Bilbrey in the long jump, triple jump, 4x100 and 4x400 relay. Landen Capp qualified in the discus and 4x100. Matt Hansen qualified in the 100, 200, 110 and 300 hurdles, and 4x400 relay. Eli Heacock qualified in the 400, 800, 1600, and both relays. Baylor Kuhbacher will run the 4x100. Thomas Oylear runs the 800, 1600, 3200, and 4x400. Josh Rasmussen runs the 800, 1600, and 3200.

For the girls, Alivia Landa goes to state in the 4x100 relay. Mia Mader qualified in the 100, 200, high jump, and 4x100. Zeason Schaffer qualified in the long jump, high jump, and 4x100, and Maddie Zimmer in the 800 and 4x100.

This week the seven boys and four girls going to state will practice their technique work, leading up to a Thursday bus ride to Great Falls, for the Class C State Meet, held Friday and Saturday.

The team brings a lot of state experience to the track, with the majority of the team qualified for state in the past. Dyrud tells us this experience may prove important, as experience lessens the pressure of a state level meet, and the presence of AA level competition, which shares the meet, magnifies the dynamic.

When comparing top qualifying marks, Broadus has a handful of times, distances, and heights in the top 10 statewide, and several in the top five.
