On May 10, Arbor Day was celebrated in Broadus after weather delays. Arbor Day is the last Friday in April, but there was no school that day. Diana Swenson's first grade class (18 students) was the cosponsor of the event.
The class walked to the Manor, planted a cottonwood tree in the fenced outdoor garden area with Broadus Tree Board members Don Birkholz, Kelda Page, Anne Amsden, and Margaret Scoles and several Manor residents. Scoles read the Arbor Day proclamation as a stand-in for mayor Chad Gatlin. After the celebration and tree planting, the students went inside to sing for residents. Riley Rodda and Laramie Pluhar hold up the letters 25 to denote the 25th anniversary of Broadus being a Tree City USA. Residents who participated were Faye Denson and Norman Turnbough, Anne Amsden, Earl Aye, and Donald Kolka.
Tree board members gave tree cookies and a gift certificate for ice cream cones to student in the class. Five trees were planted, including three bur oaks at the cemetery and a pine tree at the corner of North Trautman and West Haston Street, near the memorial bench for Lyman and Anne Amsden.
Anne Amsden initiated Broadus becoming a Tree City USA in 1999. That designation makes Broadus eligible to apply for a grant each year from the Montana DNRC to celebrate Arbor Day and plant trees.
