Track Team Elevates To New Heights At District Tournament

The Broadus Track team – both boys and girls, achieved a number of placing ribbons at the 4C District Meet last week in Baker, and will send a large contingent of the team on to the Southern Divisional, this Thursday in Laurel.

With only the top two placers in each event as automatic qualifiers for Divisionals, Broadus Coach Faith Dyrud knew the team would have to perform well at Districts. The next top 4 from within the division would also qualify, but those numbers wouldn't be completely factored in until comparing against the District 5 and 6 meets. When the numbers were all tallied, 15 of 18 team members made it on to the Laurel meet.

A huge percentage of those qualifiers did so by winning their way in through the 1st or 2nd qualifying spots, with Broadus winning 16 out of 25 events in which they competed. A number of personal records and season records were accomplished in Baker, such as Landen Capp improving his discus throw by 14 feet to win the event, and both Zeason Schaffer and Mia Mader achieving season records as well as state qualifying heights in the high jump.

The boys distance events continued to dominate, and Gracey Bradley did much the same in the one and two mile for the girls, while Matt Hansen smoked past the competition in the 110 hurdles and 100 meter race; Mia Mader did the same in the 100 and 200, and Jaxon Bilbrey jumped to victory in the triple jump and long jump.

With the number of top finishes, the Broadus boys took home a first place plaque, dominating second place Ekalaka with a 168 to 86 point score. Meanwhile the Broadus girls brought home second behind Jordan with a 107 to Jordan's 149 points – which is excellent considering Jordan's larger number of athletes on the girl's team.

"I'm super happy with how the team competed, and I'm excited to see what they can do in the last two weeks of the season," Coach Dyrud commented on the meet.

Four athletes are now pre-qualified for state – Thomas Oylear in four events, Zeason Schaffer in two, Matt Hansen in five, and Mia Mader in two. This week we'll find out who else on the team makes the field at state, to be held May 24th and 25th in Great Falls. The top six qualifiers from Divisionals are set to attend state, per Coach Dyrud.

She also commented that Harlowton currently leads the points totals in the boys in the Southern C Division.

Looking at current qualifying times and distances within the division, the Broadus boys have at least one top of the top five marks in 13 events, and the girls have at least one top five mark in six events. Those marks mean that if the athletes are able to hold their standing within the division, Broadus has a great chance to make state in a variety of events.
