Midwest Cancels Contracts for Digging 600 Oil Wells

Paul Glosser of the Little Powder River Country returned to his home a few days ago from Casper, Wyoming and reported about the cancellations. Mr. Glosser reports there were between 1,500 to 2,000 men idle there and waiting for what employment they might find.

Approximately 300 truck drivers have been laid off since the first of April, when the new railroad between Casper and Midwest began service. Casper is no place for a man with family to live, states Glosser as his expenses are more than his earnings.

Mr. Glosser had considerable difficulties in motoring to his home. Vain were his efforts to travel directly to Buffalo or Gillette because of impassable roads and washed out bridges, so he was compelled to travel to Douglas, then Gillette and down Little Powder to return. Glosser says he’s had enough of the oil fields and isn’t going back. Herman Smith, who accompanied him home, is of the same opinion.

Personnel changes at Broadus Aviation

Mike Schneider, airplane mechanic for Broadus Aviation, plans to leave Broadus about the first of the month to make his home elsewhere. This is a definite loss to the aviation service and airport facility in Broadus and no mechanic has been found yet, according to Keith Stevens, owner of Broadus Aviation.

Stevens said, however, that a flight instructor has moved to Broadus to work with the fixed base operation at the airport. Randy Popiel is a graduate of Missoula Vo-Tech and has all his flight instruction ratings. Call the local number at the Airport or Keith’s Ashland number to sign up for lessons or for more information.

Busy agenda for Historical Society by Don Heidel

The May meeting of the Historical Society will be held May 21st. At 7:30pm., according to Ann Carroll, President. Plans for the official opening on Memorial Day will be made, and with the inter-season work in the process of being done, the new season promises to be another active one.

The Community Work Day activities held last week gave the Museum buildings and grounds a thorough going-over, thanks to Patty William’s school crew who swarmed over the premises with juvenile enthusiasm, swabbing out the old jail, spiffing up Mac’s Museum, dusting, sweeping, and window cleaning the main building. Rhonda Gatlin and her pre-teen children Jordan and DrewAnne, along with the faithful Hal Hawley assisted the regular Society Staff in preparing the building for the opening. Jillian Powell, a graduating senior, decorated the window display area with an attractive cowboy and branding scene.

A big Thank You to everyone for your help!!
