Track Athletes Hit PRs In Final Regular Season Meet

The Broadus track team had an excellent day of competition on Saturday in Laurel, to cap off their regular season, with a dozen personal records between the boys and girls.

Prior to that meet, Thomas Oylear and Matt Hansen competed at the Midland Roundtable Top 10 last week. The Top 10 features the athletes with the best times or distances in each event from across Southeast and Southcentral Montana, regardless of class. That meant Oylear and Hansen competed against a number of Billings and Bozeman athletes, as well as a variety of smaller schools.

In the 110 Hurdles, Matt Hansen ran a 16.76, taking 6th. Nash Coley of Gallatin County won that race with a 15.35.

Hansen placed 3rd in the 300 meter hurdles, with a 41.69. Coley also won that race, with a 38.15.

Thomas Oylear placed third in the 2 miles run with a 9:49. Oren Arthun of Manhattan Christian set the pace with a 9:43.

On Saturday in Laurel the weather was warm and topped out around 70, per Broadus Head Track Coach Faith Dyrud, though a cool breeze throughout the day kept the competitors in their jackets in between events.

The field was packed for the day, with over 800 competitors at the meet. Dyrud said that the number of athletes caused several races to hold preliminary qualification runs, then further final runs. That meant the competitors who raced in the finals had to run extra runs compared to a normal meet, and their times tended to show the added fatigue from the additional runs.

Standout performances for Broadus included Matt Hansen, who took first in the 300 meter hurdles, amongst a field of 32. Hansen pre-qualified for state in the 300 and 110 hurdles at the Laurel Meet.

The 4x100 meter girls relay team also excelled, placing four with a team record, out of a field of 15 total teams between the prelims and final.

Josh Rasmussen PRed in the 2 mile to place 4th, and Thomas Oylear had a season record in the mile to place second.

Kiara Kelly PRed in the javelin, in her first meet back from a prior injury.

"We're peaking at the right time, and hope to continue that momentum into the tournaments," Dyrud said of the performances.

This week the team will continue their conditioning (likely off the track in the early parts of the week due to the wet conditions).

On Thursday the team will compete at the District Meet in Baker. The all-weather track is likely to be operational for the meet, though Dyrud tells us the throwing area can become a bit of a swamp if wet conditions persist.

Those who qualify will then move on to the Southern Divisional Meet, May 16th in Laurel.
