Track Team Hones Their Skills In Area Meets

Hawk track stars had a successful week of meets, beginning with a journey to the center of the nation on Tuesday the 23rd. The Belle Fourche meet featured teams from around the Northern Black Hills and Wyoming, along with a smattering of teams from the Western SD Plains, along with Broadus.

Coach Faith Dyrud told us the meet was windy but overall decent.

Highlights from the meet include Thomas Oylear placing first in the 2 miles, and the 4x400 meter relay team pre-qualifying for State with their run.

Broadus athletes also made 12 separate personal or season records at the meet – a feat which Coach Dyrud was precisely what she wanted to see as the season progresses towards tournaments, with times coming down and throws progressing as the season progresses.

On Saturday, April 27th, the team then traveled to Laurel for the Harlo/Park City Meet. At this meet, several members of the team tried out new competitions in order to fill out events which Broadus was not previously running – meaning the potential for more crucial points at tournaments, which could increase the chance of a team trophy. One example here was Matt Hansen running in the 200, in which he placed 6th.

Several PRs were had at the meet, including the girls 4x100 relay team.

This Tuesday two Broadus athletes are set to compete at the Midland Roundtable Top 10 in Laurel. Thomas Oylear qualified for the event in the 1600 and 3200, but will only compete in the 3200 save his legs and lungs for his marquis event.

Matt Hansen also qualified and will compete in both the 110 and 300 meter hurdles.

"I'm really happy to see Matt improve," Dyrud said of Hansen's qualifications, which is his first time at the meet. Oylear ran in the event last season.

The remainder of the team will have the week to train in practice, focusing on their technique and speed as they ready for their last regular season meet of the year – the Al Walker Memorial Stillwater Meet, once again in Laurel on Saturday.

From there the team will prepare for Districts on Thursday, May 9th at Baker.
