Shane Dunning, author of the Red Shale Reflections historical column for the Examiner, was recently awarded for his work in Montana: The Magazine of Western History. The Western Heritage Awards are an annual event honoring significant contributions to western heritage, and are put on by the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Dunning won the 2023 award for outstanding magazine article, and was presented a coveted "Wrangler" bronze sculpture, designed by artist Harold Holden, for his work on the article "The Geddes Murder Trial: Gender, Race, and Murder-for-Hire in Montana's Criminal Justice System," which appeared in Montana Magazine's Winter 2022 edition.
The event took place earlier this month in Oklahoma City, and besides Dunning's win, also included a number of other prestigious winners including a lifetime achievement award for Reba McEntire, and an induction into the hall of great western performers for Keith Carradine, both of whom were present at the event. The awards show was hosted by actor Rex Linn, who most recently played the high school principal in TV's Young Sheldon.
Dunning told us that the awards show featured an estimated 600 attendees, as well as a great dinner, and he met some wonderful people at the event.
Shane's presentation speech, as well as the entire award ceremony is available for those who subscribe to the Cowboy Channel, or by going to http://www.cowboychannelplus.com and searching for "Western Heritage Awards".
The Wrangler Award is the second major western history award won by Dunning. He also won a prestigious Spur Award for his literary work in 2022 from the Western Writers of America.
