Broadus High Track competed in two meets over the last week, including one at Miles City, and another in Baker.
The Miles City B/C Invite last Tuesday featured several Class B teams, as well as Southern C teams which Broadus would face down the road at tournaments. Weather was blustery for the meet, but Broadus was able to pull out a number of personal records and season records – 15 in total. Gracey Bradley won the 1600 and Mia Mader the high jump in the girls, while Eli Heacock snagged 1st in the 400, Matt Hansen 1st in the 300 hurdles, and Thomas Oyelar 1st in the 2 mile. Numerous other top 5 performances showed that Hawk athletes are ready to compete against their Class C brethren come tournament time.
At Baker on Saturday the weather was hot, and several athletes were gone due to sickness, according to Broadus Coach Faith Dyrud, who we spoke to on Monday. This meet also featured a number of teams from our division. PRs in shot put were attained by Landen Capp, Reuben Kinzer, Logan Capp, and Kordell Schonenbach, and PRs in javelin from Reuben and Landen, showing that those boys are progressing in their sports. Several other PRs were also attained from runners and jumpers. Though no Broadus atheltes stood atop the podium, the showing in PRs demonstrated that the team is improving as the season progresses.
This week the team returns to Baker for a meet on Friday, and then travels to a meet in Belle Fourche next Tuesday. Dyrud tells us that for the most part South Dakota track competition is similar to Montana events. One major difference is in the number of events an athlete can enter, at 4 events vs 5 in Montana. Faith says this change will affect a small number of athletes.
