Basketball Teams Finish Regular Season

The Broadus basketball teams closed out their regular season over the weekend with home games against Plevna and Terry. Both Broadus teams rolled through Plevna for wins, and while the Hawks handily beat Terry to secure a first round bye at the District tourney, the Lady Hawks lost a close game to the Lady Terriers to finish the season as the #3 seed.

Girls

A combination of good shooting (1.02 points per possession) and low turnovers (3) helped the Lady Hawks to beat Plevna 58-28 on Friday. Three Broaus players scored in triple digits, included Emma Isaacs, leading the team with 15 points while shooting 7 for 12, Mia Mader with 13, and Maddie Zimmer with 10 points.

Hayden Lane of Plevna led the Lady Cougars in scoring, with 14.

In a scene similar to last weekend's comeback against Jordan, the Lady Hawks found themselves down by ten points at the half to Terry.

Broadus scored an outstanding 23 points in the third quarter to tie the game at the beginning of the fourth, but the hot outside shooting of Terry's Kiera Chaska proved to be too much, as they pulled ahead to win 58-56, buoyed by Chaska's seven three point shots and 26 points in total.

"We had chances to win that game," Coach Kristie Lanke told us of the close loss. "We missed ten free throws, and were out rebounded."

The loss put the girls into the third place slot in the district. Lanke said there are some upsides to playing the first round – specifically, the Lady Hawks will a chance to get the younger players time on the court in the tournament atmosphere, in a game which should be winnable.

Broadus will face Plevna in the first round of the District Tournament, on Thursday at Custer County High in Miles City, at 7pm. That all being said, every team goes into tournaments with what amounts to an 0-0 record, and you never know who will show up ready to play – there are very often upsets at Districts.

A first round win will put Broadus up against Terry.

Coach Kristie Lanke told us that she's been telling her team: "It's difficult to beat a competitive team three times in a row," and if Broadus meets Terry in the tournament the plan is to stay true to that saying, as Broadus lost the two regular season games by the same score: 56-58 in each meeting, with the first going to overtime.

Boys

The Hawks scored 69 points and 1.03 points per possession as they caged the Cougars of Plevna on Friday, with Broadus shooting 40% from three point land, sinking 9 in total.

Even with the win, Coach Dustin Lanke is looking at ways his team could improve. One such area is rebounding, where Plevna had 20 offensive rebounds. "We have strong kids, they just need to be better about boxing out," Dustin commented.

Broadus won the game 68-38.

Four players scored in double digits for the Hawks, including Jaxon Bilbrey, Thomas Oylear, Cooper Zimmer, and Zach Jones.

Hosting Terry on Saturday, Broadus played good defense, limiting Terry to double digit scoring in only one quarter as the won 58-31.

Broadus also shot the ball well from the free throw line, sinking 13 of 15 for 87% scoring.

Jaxon Bilbrey led the Hawks in scoring with 17. Thomas Oylear and Landen Capp each had 11.

With the first round bye at tournaments gained from the #2 seed, the Hawks will have an extra day to practice on Thursday. Their first game will come Friday evening at 5:30 against the winner of the Plevna/Wibaux game. The Hawks have won in both meetings against each team. In closest of the four games, Broadus beat Plevna in their first matchup by 27 points.

A win on Friday would put Broadus into the championship, and punch their ticket to the Divisional Tournament, as three teams go from this District. That tournament will be held March 28-February 2nd, and will also take place in Miles City.
