If you have a favorite charity and need motivation to move, enter your team in the Steps for Charity challenge. The 8-week event runs from February 1st through March 31st. Four people make up a team and local charities receive a part of the $15.00 per person registration fee. The event is organized by Powder River Trails and MSU Extension Service – Powder River County.
Last year, more than 80 people registered for the Challenge, which raised $1,200 for local charities including the Powder River Senior Center, the Broadus Cancer Fund and the Amanda Gaskill Spray and Neuter Fund. Each charity was recognized in the Powder River Examiner to increase awareness about the important charitable work being done by local people.
The rules are as follows:
1) Four people to a team;
2) Entry fee is $15 per person, or $60 per team;
3) Submit the team’s total weekly steps each Monday to the Extension Office;
4) The three top teams with the most steps will choose which charities will receive the pool of money. 50% of the registration fee goes directly to EACH charity chosen. The remaining fifty percent is decided by the three teams who track the most steps. The top team’s charity wins 50%; 2nd place wins 30%, and 3rd place wins 20%. Each charity chosen by the teams that enter receives money from the Steps for Charity Challenge.
5) Bonus steps are given to team members who are 70 years of age or older.
The high school hallways are available for walking if the weather is inclement. Steps for Charity participants can walk Mondays through Thursdays at either 7:00 to 7:30 a.m. or from 4 to 6:00 p.m.
Registration deadline is Wednesday, January 31st. Pedometers to track steps are available for $5 at the Extension Office. Join the fun and register by contacting the Powder River County Extension Office at 436-2424, or online at the Powder River Trails website at http://www.powderrivertrails. com.
