Broadus wrestlers traveled to the frozen plains of North Dakota to compete at the Hettinger Classic last weekend.
Broadus Coach Frankie Schoonover told us that North Dakota wrestlers use different weight classes than Montana, and also have more weight allowance, while weighing in the same morning as the meet, compared to the night before like in MT. These subtle differences meant that MT wrestlers were often outweighed by their Dakota opponents, but nevertheless Broadus wrestlers competed well with numerous placings in the tournament.
Here are the results:
2024 Hettinger Classic- Broadus Girls Results
The Broadus girls accumulated 33 points, for 8th place out of 12 teams. Miles City won the event with 144 points (and 16 girl wrestlers on their team).
Varsity Girls 124
Macyn McDowell placed 4th and scored 13.0 team points. Macyn pinned three opponents and was pinned twice. Schoonover told us Macyn had an outstanding weekend. Prior to the meet she had been working in practice on her bridges and takedowns, and she put those skills to the test in the semi-final, when she nearly won her way into the championship. In the 3rd/4th match Macyn wrestled an opponent who had around 8 lbs on her, but she still put up a valiant fight.
Varsity Girls 136
Bonita Kinzer placed 4th and scored 11.0 team points. Bonita pinned two opponents, was pinned twice, and lost by tech fall in the 3rd place match. Bonita and Macyn are partners in practice, and push each other to achieve great things. Bonita is only an 8th grader, and Macyn a 9th grader, so they have years to hone their skills, yet are already showing great poise on the mats at such a young age.
Varsity Girls 155
Novalee Blakeman placed 3rd. She lost twice by pin. Frankie told us that Novalee has the knowledge to compete, but still needs to learn to apply it on the mat.
Varsity Girls 190
Aspen Krantz placed is 3rd and scored 9.0 team points. Aspen pinned one opponent and lost by pin in two matches. Aspen has already achieved life changing goals in her first year as a wrestler, dropping weight to wrestle. Schoonover said she won her last match and he's proud to see what she has accomplished.
2024 Hettinger Classic- Broadus Boys Results
The Broadus boys accumulated 51 points, for 10th place out of 14 teams. Sturgis Brown High won the event with 451 points (with 32 wrestlers).
Varsity 107
AJ Schoenbeck placed 12th and scored 4.0 team points, winning one match and losing four.
Varsity 114
Braydn Stoddard-Terrill placed 12th, in his first match of High School Wrestling. Braydn is an 8th grader, and is now coming off a hand injury to compete.
Varsity 133
Kail Irish placed 6th and scored 11.0 team points. Kail won two matches by decision, lost one by pin, and two by decision. Schoonover commented that Kail's opponents have started to figure out his moves. Kail is working on becoming a more complete wrestler and is now working towards that next level.
Varsity 139
Raiden Aurand placed 8th and scored 7.0 team points. Raiden won once by major decision, once by pin, and lost by pin in four matches and once by decision in the 7th place match.
Varsity 152
Riggin Schaffer placed 7th and scored 4.0 team points. Riggin wrestled in 6 matches, winning two, including the 7th place match in which he pinned his opponent. Riggin is in a tough weight class, and ran into some very tough competition. Schoonover said that at Hettinger, Riggin proved why he won the BAGUBA award last season, "brutally aggressive guy uninhibited by adversity.
Varsity 160
Collin Weatherell placed 8th and scored 8.0 team points. Collin wrestled in 7 matches, pinning two opponents. Collin impressed Schoonover at Hettinger with his ability to flow with his opponents moves, catching them when they made mistakes.
Varsity 215
Reuben Kinzer placed 4th and scored 15.0 team points. Reuben won two matches out of five, including a pin in round 5 to place 4th.
Varsity 285
Kordell Schonenbach placed 7th and scored 2.0 team points. Kordell wrestled in six matches, falling by pin in each match. At Kordell's weight class he's often wrestling older opponents, some of which are full grown 18 year old men – a tough feat for a high school freshman.
