Superintendent's Report

By Broadus Schools Superintendent Jim Hansen

This fall I didn’t have the opportunity to follow my favorite team/ the Minnesota Vikings. So, when my brother asked me what I thought of the new starting quarterback I had no idea what he was talking about. My brother explained that after being let go from six other teams Josh Dobbs led the Vikings to a 31-28 victory, but that is not the most remarkable thing about Mr. Dobbs. After some research, my brother explained, Josh Dobbs graduated as an aeronautical engineer with a perfect 4.0 GPA, participated in debate, band, and three sports in high school. However, the most impressive characteristic is he maintained perfect attendance in school. Dobbs' perfect school attendance since kindergarten was so important to him that he didn't leave for college recruiting visits until after 1 p.m. on Friday, when he would be credited with a full day.

While serving as your high school principal I spent numerous hours wrestling with attendance issues, but still managed to award perfect attendance plaques each year. In an attempt to promote attendance, the district implemented and changed attendance policies over the years. Certainly, attendance is an indicator of academic success and ones’ future work ethic. Unfortunately, during the 2022-23 school year we did not have any students in grades 7-12 with perfect attendance.

Even with all the academic and athletic gifts Josh Dobbs possesses, he teaches us a vital lesson: “You have to show up.”
