Broadus Basketball Teams Play In Tough Non-Conference Games

The Broadus basketball teams faced a one-two punch of formidable opponents over the weekend, facing off against historic rivals – from the days spent in Class B, hosting Baker, as well as a more recent Class C rival, playing in Melstone.

The Broadus varsity boys had a difficult first quarter against Baker in the opening night of home basketball action on Friday, as they fell behind 7-20 after the first quarter, missing a number of layups in the process. Broadus maintained in the second quarter and battled back in the second half to outscore Baker 35-27, but that first quarter deficit was just too deep to overcome for the Hawks, as they lost 58-65 to the Class B team.

Broadus had a tough time with Baker's 6'7" foreign exchange student, which made scoring inside difficult. That lack of inside shooting, along with a large number of turnover and fouls from Broadus helped with the loss, but nonetheless the Hawks held out fairly well against a larger school.

Highlights for the Hawks included 16 points from Matt Hansen, as well as a 91.7% free throw shooting percentage, as the Hawks went 11 of 12 from the line.

At Saturday against Melstone, the Hawks foul troubles and turnovers once again became an issue, as the team turned the ball over 19 times and gave up 15 free throw attempts to Melstone, while the Hawks only shot two free throws the entire game.

"We are not disciplined, and take a lot of outside shots and force passes," Coach Dustin Lanke commented on the Hawk's performance, which saw Broadus shooting 22 times from beyond the arc, and sinking 5.

Broadus led throughout the first quarter but fell behind and stayed behind to lose 42-59 against the 5C Melstone team.

This Friday, Broadus hosts Ekalaka for the first conference game of the season. Lanke tells us Ekalaka is improved from last season, so fans may be in for a competitive game. The Hawks will then be off for Christmas break before returning to practice on the hardwood next week. In many years past the gym was resurfaced over Christmas break, but this year that job was accomplished over summer and is still looking good.

In JV boys action, the five strong JV squad faced off against Melstone, with a Broadus player fouling out in the fourth quarter to put the teams into a 4 on 5 situation. At the end of regulation the game was tied, and after going to overtime and then double overtime Broadus had a second player foul out to become a 3 on 5 game. Broadus finally lost in double overtime by two points, 44-46.

We did not have a chance to speak with Head Girls Coach Kristie Lanke about the girls games. Broadus lost to Baker by a score of 35-80, as Broadus accumulated 41 turnovers in a game which saw Baker continuing to use a full court press with a 40+ point lead in the 4th quarter. Maddie Zimmer led the Lady Hawks in scoring with 11 points. Madison O'Connor had 29 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 steals for Baker.

On Saturday against Melstone, the Lady Broncs got out to an early 20-8 lead, and though each team had a slow second quarter (only scoring 4 and 5 points each), Broadus was not able to overcome the deficit, as they lost 37-52. Emma Isaacs led in scoring at Melstone with 12, while Mia Mader had 11 points.
