BHS Music Department Sends 17 Students To District Honor Band & Choir

By Kim Blain

Broadus High School Music Department was well represented last week, November 13th and 14th, at the 2023 District 10 Honor Band and Choir, held in Forsyth.

Students participated in two intense days of clinics/rehearsals with guest directors, Rhonda Burghardt (Choir) of Laurel High School and Kilee Sundt (Band) of Sidney High School.

BHS Band members participating were: James Augare, Becca Aye, Talyn Conley,Archer Edwards, Kensi Emmons, Kaytlin Fairbank, Zach Jones, Reuben Kinzer, Ashton Madsen, Riley Mitchell, Zoe Page, and Aiden Roberts.

The Honor band of 50 members performed a couple of very moving pieces, including "With Every Winter's Breath" by Standridge and "Flight of the Thunderbirds" by Saucedo and a couple of fun pieces, as well, including "Encanto" by Smith and music from Stranger Things by O'Loughlin.

With great courage and amazing effort, Juniors Zoe Page and Zach Jones auditioned and were selected for the solos in With Every Winter's Breath and Flight of the Thunderbirds, respectively. This is an amazing accomplishment and BHS Music is beyond proud of these two students.

Choir members participating were: Aspen Alderman, Shelby Anderson, Justin Aye, Collin Weatherell, and Laney Williams.

The 70 voice Honor Choir performed "Kwela, Kwela" by Sotho and Zulu traditional songs, "Laudate Dominum" by Davison, "Hope is a Thing with Feathers" by Rodriguez, and "Autumn Gives Her Hand to Winter" by Loftis.

As the name implies, it is an honor for our music students to be selected and to perform with a larger group of musicians. We extend our thanks to Forsyth High School and Music Director Matthew Radue for hosting the 2023 District 10 Honor Band and Choir. We also want to thank Mariah Perry and Ernie Reaves for the safe travel to and from the event.
