Hawk Football Wins In Front Of Homecoming Crowd

Hawk Football won for the first time this season on Friday, beating the Lodge Grass Indians by a score of 36-24, during Broadus' Homecoming.

In order for the game to even take place, Broadus Bus Driver Ernie Reaves made a trip to Lodge Grass and drove their team over to Broadus and back, after Lodge Grass was unable to locate a driver for the game.

After Lodge Grass arrived in Broadus, the Hawks made quick work to put up three touchdowns in the first quarter. Lodge Grass ran in one touchdown but failed on the ensuing 2 point conversion, ending the first quarter 22-6. Broadus turned the ball over twice in the second quarter, once on a questionable fumble where the runner was down and the ball then popped out from the impact, but was ruled a fumble and turnover.

Despite the turnovers, Broadus held Lodge Grass to only one more score in the second quarter, going into the locker rooms up 36-12.

In the third quarter Broadus found themselves in penalty trouble, and failed to score. Lodge Grass scored 12 more in the fourth quarter. Broadus steadily ran the ball late in the game to burn time off the clock, and were able to finish out the game with their first win.

"We were able to close out the game on our terms. That was the first time we've been able to do that this season," Coach Brett Emmons told us during a Monday interview.

He continued: "Our offensive and defensive lines did a great job and played a complete game. The O-line picked up their blitzes and stunts, and gave Jayce [Schroeder] time to throw."

Emmons noted that there were some definite takeaways from the game that he needs to work on with the team in the practices ahead. Tackling and pass coverage are on the list, both of which were issues during the game, especially when Lodge Grass attempted a reverse as well as a flea flicker, the latter of which could've resulted in a momentum shift as the ball sailed to a wide open receiver. The 4th down play in the first half with a close score instead resulted in an incompletion and turnover on downs.

Some highlights of the game include Baylor Kuhbacher's 70 yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and a Landen Capp 66 yard reception. Jayce Schroeder went 6 of 9 on passes for 123 yards and three touchdowns, and ran another touchdown in himself.

The Hawks remain mostly healthy, with no major injuries to speak of.

This Friday, Broadus travels to Ekalaka to take on the Bulldogs. Ekalaka is coming off a bye week and are 2-1, having beaten Lodge Grass 52-30 and Park City 54-42. In Week 1 they fell to Wibaux, 38-6.

Emmons commented: "Ekalaka is a well coached, good team. We're going to focus on what we do best, and take it one play at a time."
