District Court Roundup

Last week in District Court, an arraignment hearing was held for Shane Copps, in which he pled not guilty to two felony theft charges. The charges date to incidents which transpired in August and September of 2021, when Copps was employed by PR County. Copps is alleged to have submitted requests for reimbursement for installation of equipment on a 2020 Ford Explorer owned by PR First Responders. The order was then cancelled, but the money (two charges for $2,590.50) was not returned to the appropriate fund. These charges carry penalties of up to 3 years in prison and a $1,500 fine. An omnibus hearing is set for October, and Copps was released on his own recognizance.

John Gabriel Hubbard of West Virginia was charged with three counts in relation to the unlawful taking of a mule deer doe in 2018. These counts are tied in with the illegal outfitting cases featured in our August 24th issue. Hubbard has pled not guilty to the charges.

An omnibus hearing was held for Bram Schaffer, who was in court for charges of a 4th DUI, which would be a felony offense. Schaffer was pulled over 7 miles SE of Broadus on June 3rd and subsequently charged.

Colton Grant was sentenced to a two year deferred sentence, probation, and anger management classes after pleading no contest to an incident in the vicinity of the IGA parking lot in which Grant pointed an AR-15 rifle at CJ Gaskill, in October of 2022.

Kyle Giacometto was placed into the NEXUS meth treatment center after violations of his parole from a 2014 felony burglary conviction. A search of Giacometto’s residence in April found violations, and Giacometto subsequently tested positive for meth.

An adjudication hearing is scheduled in October for Cory Hopkins, who was pulled over on August 8th in Alzada and charged with probation violations from a 2019 meth, paraphernalia, and speeding case. Hopkins was found to be driving while intoxicated, and driving with a suspended license and registration. He tested positive for meth, and was also found to be traveling outside the state, in violation of his parole.
