XC Team Proves To Be A  Giant Killer In First Meet

Placing ninth out of a field of 36 teams, while beating AA Billings Senior and a variety of Class A schools, the Broadus boys cross country team performed very well in their first meet of the year, last Friday at the Billings Invitational Meet at Amend Park in Yellowstone County.

Not to be outdone, the Broadus girls had personal records in their runs, but with only two of the three members running in the meet due to accumulated practices needed to compete, they did not have a team score.

Running for the XC team this year are 10 competitors. Broadus Head Coach Ashley Emmons, now coaching in her sixth year of Cross Country since the program began in Broadus back in 2018, told us that the team has been excelling in practice, hitting their times on interval runs and exceeding expectations. Those expectations, at least from the runners’ perspectives, are indeed lofty, as the boys were not happy with their 9th place finish. “They wanted to win”, Ashley said of the team’s goals.

The team will have more chances to improve their performances in the coming season, as they compete in the Hardin XC Invitational, this Friday in Crow Agency. This meet often proves to be a scorcher, and with temperatures forecasted to be in the 90 degree range for the meet, the race may live up to its reputation. The Hardin Meet also historically features “Gas Cap Hill”, a steep, long climb that runners must prepare to summit.
