Kicking off their season against Plentywood at home on Friday evening, the Broadus Hawk Varsity football team lost by a score of 0-40.
With fifteen players on the team for the season, only 12 were suited up due to the need for the mandatory number of practices before game play and other factors, according to Head Coach Brett Emmons. Brett coached for Broadus in the past and now returns to call plays for the team.
The Hawks had 75 yards of total offense in the game, while Plentywood's 6'2", 175 lb Senior QB Noah Murray made some athletic performances to score on passing plays, and evaded tackles.
Despite the score, there were some bright spots for the Hawks as they were able to get into the backfield – Hawks defensive lineman James Augare had three tackles in the backfield for losses, and Broadus had two interceptions in the game.
"We made a lot of mistakes that stopped our offensive drives," Emmons said of the game. "Overall there were some good takeaways from the game. The team pulled together and didn't give up, and we see what we need to work on going forward."
Brett also noted that the leaders on the team were making their presence known on the field, as players such as Landen Capp, Kail Irish, Jayce Schroeder, and Duke Blankenship worked to motivate the team and keep them headed the right direction.
The Hawks will now take on conference rival Forsyth this Friday in Forsyth, with the junior high playing at 4:30, and the varsity at 7. Forsyth is coming off a loss to Scobey 40-22; this will be the first conference game for both the Hawks and the Dogies. The 4 SE Division team that played games over the weekend are all 0-1.
Emmons tells us that Forsyth has a run heavy attack, with a large number of seniors on the team.
