The carcass contest provides a look "under the hide" for market animals exhibited at the Powder River County Fair. Technician Elin Kittelmann evaluated the live animals with ultra-sound during the Fair; the results were announced last week at a carcass viewing hosted by Broadus Meats.
The top three lambs in the live show also topped the carcass show with a little shuffling between the three. Addison Randall won the carcass contest with her lamb that had placed 2nd on the hoof. She received a buckle sponsored by Dale Edwards Inc. – Francis & Diana Edwards and Steve & Sarah Edwards. Macey Madsen, who won the live show, placed 2nd in the carcass show and Kinzie Randall placed third on the hoof and on the rail. Twelve market lambs were exhibited at the Fair. The top three winners split cash awards sponsored by Askin Construction and Jim & Emily Madsen.
First through third place in the beef contest received cash awards sponsored by The Body Shop and Lester & Dawn Aye. Placing first was Danica Schroeder, who placed 5th in the live show. Danica also received a buckle sponsored by the Craig & Christine Appleman family.
Sisters Addison and Paisley Harper placed second and third, respectively. Addison's steer placed sixth on the hoof and Paisley's placed eighth out of nineteen steers.
Swine carcass contest cash awards were sponsored by AgWest Farm Credit and Denbury Onshore. The Kuhbacher siblings shared the winner's spotlight with Denver, first year 4-H member, placing first and receiving a buckle sponsored by Olson Farm & Ranch. Second place went to his sister Courtney.
Denver's hog placed 11th and Courtney's 14th in the live show against a record setting class of 35 hogs. Emelyn Harper placed third with her hog that also placed 3rd on the hoof.
