Rev. Duncan Gets Better Auto for His Work

The Rev. John Duncan, Congregational minister, whose headquarters are at Coalwood, Powder River County, has one of the largest parishes in the United States, says the Miles City Daily Star, embracing a territory of 3,000 square miles. Alone he has ministered to the spiritual needs of the scattered population of the south country for months in an old Ford car, but on his last trip over to his parish he rode in a new car which is equipped with a self starter, and bearing the legend “Congregational Service Car”.

Theater is Closed

Orvie Hough, owner of the Pastime Theatre in Broadus, announced the closing of his business effective August 1. Mr. Hough stated his reluctance to take the move but indicated that it was necessary as attendance had been so poor and the type of films available to him were not the types of films that received good reception with the community in the past.

The movie, “The Mind Snatchers”, scheduled for July 31 and August 1 was the last picture shown before the closure, Hough said.

Todd Harris Memorial Tourney a Huge Success

By Sylvia Zimmer

One hundred seventeen individuals, making up 10 teams, competed over the weekend in the annual scholarship softball tournament. A total community effort has made this tournament one of the best, from donated umpiring, scorekeeping, and field preparation to the Close-Up kids doing the concessions.

After coming all the way back up the loser’s bracket, playing a total of seven games, the “Goofies” team won the jackets awarded for the Champions. Team members were John Bells, Scott Cain, Scott Bischke, Phillip Daly, Ben Weber, Carlo Barbero, Joseph Smith, Jolene Randall, Joy Price, Martha Harleen, and Captain Chad Harrington.

Second place sweatshirts went to the “Donald Ducks” consisting of Owen Rumph, Jason and Captain Jerry Coulter, Dave Price, Ernie Reaves, Nathan Perleberg, Brad Quade, Becky Stennerson, Ann Emmons, Trish Stradtman, Crystal Olson, and Erin Sanburn. The “Donald Ducks” won three games consecutively and then lost their fourth and fifth to the “Goofies”.

Winning the third place t-shirts were the “Lueys”. This team was led by Captain Frank Danielson, John Bummer, Troy Harrington, Cody Samuelson, Hans Reed, Joel Mathieson, Josh Gansel, Carla Bone, Rhonda Buhmann, Carlene Gaskill and Buddi Clements.

The awards were all done by Tammy Schoenbeck, owner of the Shirt Shack. Proceeds from player’s fees offset this expense.

Courtney Gatlin was picked as the “Inspirational” award winner and Leslie Bird won the “Sportsmanship” award.

Twenty-four individuals tried their luck at hitting a ball into the back of Trump’s Repair pickup box filled with water Saturday night. After play for the day concluded, a test of skill and accuracy was held. Carey Trump’s white pickup was parked approximately 250 feet from home plate in center plate. A total of five swings per participants were allowed with the option of entering twice, but not batting consecutively. The pitcher was the hitter’s choice.

The only one making the “big splash” was Billy “White Shoes” Janssen! For his almost impossible feat he received a jacket. Jerry Coulter was second receiving a baseball shirt and Scott Bischke, third, a t-shirt.
