Thirty-five market hogs debuted at the Powder River County Fair, according to MSU Extension Agent Mary Rumph, a record setting number in the last four decades. They ranged in size, color and temperament, but all showed well and sold well, despite a couple hot days at the Fair. "We are going to have to increase our capacity for hogs if this keeps up," said one Fairboard member, as the area designated for the hogs was completely utilized.
The Grand Champion Market Hog was exhibited by Rheanna Schroeder. Kinzie Randall received Reserve Grand Champion honors.
The Schroeder family swept the Showmanship awards with Rheanna earning Champion Senior Swine honors; Jayce receiving Reserve Champion Senior Swine Showman; Jordyn won Champion Junior Swine Showman and Danica won Reserve Champion Junior Swine Showman. Senra Gnerer won the Best Beginner Swine Showman award with her pig "Petunia".
Macey Madsen had quite a Fair. She exhibited the Grand Champion Market Lamb; the Grand Champion Market Steer; was the Champion Junior Sheep Showman and the Champion Junior Beef Showman; the Reserve Grand Champion Junior Round Robin Showman and winner of the Amanda Gaskill Memorial buckle for the Best Beginner Round Robin Showman. She will compete in the Champion of Champions Market Beef Show in Miles City on Saturday, August 26th with her steer. Joining her will be Jayce Schroeder, Reserve Grand Champion Market Steer exhibitor. Jayce was a force in the showring, earning Grand Champion Beef Breeding; Champion Angus Female and Reserve Champion Senior Beef Showman. He shared the winner's circle with sisters Rheanna, Champion Senior Beef Showman and Jordyn, Reserve Champion Junior Beef Showman. The Best Beginner Beef Showman award went to Thad Escott. Kayleigh Nisley received honors for the Reserve Grand Champion Beef Breeding project with her heifer calf who arrived early to the Fair due to threatening fires creating a pre-evacuation. She also received the Grand Champion Feeder Steer award sponsored by the Smith Cattle Co. In addition to the cattle and sheep Kayleigh brought to town, her poultry exhibits included a rooster who cheerfully greeted the early morning Fair attendees.
Kayleigh won the Champion Senior Poultry Showman award. Delaney Ruland was the Champion Junior Poultry Showman. She also received the Grand and Reserve Champion Poultry exhibit awards.
Kayleigh was back in the winner's circle for winning the Champion Senior Sheep Showman award with Addison Draine receiving Reserve Sheep showman honors. Reserve Champion Junior Sheep Showman was Addison Randall, who also exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion Market Lamb. The Best Beginner Sheep Showman was Faith Hopkins. Delaney Ruland exhibited the Grand Champion Feeder Lamb; the Champion Targhee Ewe, and the Reserve Champion Suffolk Ewe. The Grand Champion Breeding Sheep was exhibited by Addison Draine, who also won Champion Crossbred Ewe. Kayleigh Nisley exhibited the Champion Suffolk Ewe and captured the award for the Reserve Grand Champion Breeding Sheep.
The Hagedorn sisters competed in the Goat Show. Kassie Hagedorn was the Champion Junior Goat Showman, with Anna receiving Reserve honors. Best Beginner Goat Showman was Emma Mills. Anna exhibited the Champion Dairy Goat with Kassie receiving Reserve Champion Dairy Goat. Emma Mills exhibited the Champion Meat Goat; the Champion Market Goat; and earned the Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion overall goat awards.
The Rumph duo of Grady and Kaley brought dairy cows to town with Kaley winning Champion Dairy Showman and Grady winning reserve. Kaley also won the Grand Champion Dairy award and Grady earned Reserve Grand Champion. The two siblings were also responsible for bringing a novelty to the Fair, three alpacas. Kaley earned Grand Champion honors and Grady was named Reserve.
In the Round Robin Showman Contest, the Madsen family made a strong showing. In addition to Macey winning Reserve Grand Champion Junior Round Robin Showman and the Amanda Gaskill award; her brother Ashton won the Grand Champion Junior Round Robin award and her sister Shyla was named the Grand Champion Senior Round Robin Showman. The Reserve Grand Champion Senior Round Robin showman was Rheanna Schroeder. Others who competed in the Round Robin included: Junior Division - Laney Williams, Colton Jones, Jordyn Schroeder, Danica Schroeder, Addie Randall and Reece Emmons. Senior Division competitors included Alivia Landa, Jayce Schroeder, Kayleigh Nisley, and Addison Draine.
