Sheriff Boman Graduates Law Enforcement Academy

Powder River County Sheriff Devin Boman graduated from the Montana Law Enforcement Academy recently, having completed the intensive 12 week course in Helena.

The course features topics such as law & criminal procedure, fair & impartial policing, patrol operations, traffic enforcement, investigations, firearms instruction & defensive techniques, along with a host of other topics.

Sheriff Boman told us that his class was informed that the school had recently been converted to a more practical, scenario based training setup than in years past, with an extended curriculum that entailed 504 hours of training.

Some of the more exciting classes include the driving course, ranges concentrating on handguns as well as some rifle work, and the "fight for life" where candidates must fend for themselves hand to hand against aggressors.

Candidates go through situations with active shooters, and the final test includes a multitude of scenarios, some of which include handling a DUI, a bar fight, testifying in a court case, a partner/family member assault, and a sexual assault.

Boman said the instructors were knowledgeable and experienced, and some of his biggest take-aways from the course were the connections he's made within the Montana law enforcement community, as well as future trainings he is setting up for the PR County Sheriff's Department in the future.

Sheriff Boman told us that his attendance at the course was a reflection of the public's confidence in his upholding of the standard for law enforcement of the community to which he was elected, and he was glad to attend.

In the future, more members of the PR Sheriff's Department are slated to attend the academy, including Deputy Ishmael Perrin in September, and Deputies Cody Stuchlik and Levi Mitchell in January.

Sheriff Boman and Undersheriff Ayche Draine are the two current department members who have attended the academy.
