By Broadus VFD Fire Chief Raymond Ragsdale
Oh my, what a 4th of July. Broadus Volunteer Fire Department would like to thank everyone who supported us. We never dreamed we would have the turnout we had on a Tuesday with the possibility of bad weather. There was good support for the parade, both participants and spectators, and then we started getting ready for the barbeque. The barbecue was supposed to start at noon; we had a half hour to get things going. I went to the store at 11:35 and my cooks were already calling saying they needed more stuff. What a crowd!
We would like to thank Terry and Sherry Considine for the for their donation of the hamburgers, which were already made into patties; the meat was top notch. John and Jenny Olson donated the brats. I figured there would be some left over...if you weren't in line right away, you didn't get one of theirs. I went back to the IGA twice for hot dogs. The IGA donated all the buns and condiments. The fine foks at the IGA also made potato salad for us, and supplied the beans and the chips. All I have to say is if you went away hungry, it was your own fault, there was plenty of good food to eat. Thank you to everyone who donated and to everyone who showed up for your support.
The fire department sponsored a cornhole tournament at the Courthouse after lunch and had a good turnout for it. Congratulations to Pat Ruland; his name was pulled out of the hat to win the barbeque grill.
We would like to thank Kelda Page for making all the tickets and flyers for the raffle, fireman wives for all their help, Rich and Melinda Biesheuvel for setting up their big tent. There were a lot of fireworks set off around town and Kurt Copps and Zach Worman put on an excellent presentation off B Hill. The music at the Stockman's was as good as it gets, and I have heard that the food wasn't too shabby, either. As far as I know there were no fingers blown off and no fires started, so it was a very successful and enjoyable 4th of July, and if I have missed anyone I apologize.
