Following a dry spring, the local weather in June was decidedly moist. The storms which had thus far been avoiding much of SE Montana found their way into the region.
A flow of moisture from the southwest was responsible for many of the June storms, as damp air streamed northwards, dumping monsoonal type moisture from June 10th onwards.
As of June 9th, Broadus sat at 1.71” below normal precip for the year. By July 1, Broadus was 0.18” above normal. In that stretch of time, 3.55” of rain fell in Broadus, compared to a normal for the entire month of June of 2.37”.
Broadus had a high for the month of 90, on both June 6th and 8th, while temperatures later in the month trended downwards, and fell on the lower end of the bell curve, with a low of 43 June 17th.
The moisture totals across the area were somewhat spotty, with specific local regions seeing extremely heavy rain (we heard anecdotal reports of over 4” of rain within a day or two timeframe at specific locations, with significant runoff occurring).
The Biddle 8 miles SW station had 3.26” of rain in June. The high temp there was 87, on June 6th, and the low was 41, on June 17th.
The Moorhead 9 miles NE station had some early June storms that missed several other stations, with over ½” between June 1-3. Their total for June was 4.32”, nearly double the normal of 2.17”. That station had a high of 89 on the 6th, and a low of 41 on the 17th.
The Sonnette 7 miles SW station received 3.82” of precip in June. The high for the month was 86, on the 6th, and the low was 40, on the 17th.
The Volborg station had 3.00” of rain in June.
The Powderville 8 miles NNE station also had over ½” on June 1 and 2, and a total of 4.90” of precip on the month, compared to a normal of 2.68”. Their high for the month was 92, on June 8th, and the low was 42, on the 17th.
Looking further afield, Ekalaka had 6.42” of rain in June, Miles City had 4.07”, Billings had 6.36”, Sheridan, WY had 5.29”, Gillette, WY had 3.90”, and Spearfish, SD had 8.37”.
