Local Veteran Peter A. Hanks was honored at the Memorial Day Ceremony in Broadus. Pete was born in Bay City, MI, and eventually settled south of Broadus near Graham on a homestead with his parents. Peter was killed in action in WW1, and buried in France. Peter's mother, Ida, later took a trip to France with the Gold Star Mothers, and brought back a receptacle of soil from his grave. When Peter's father (who was also named Peter) passed away in 1935, the dirt from the Veteran's final resting place in France was placed in the soil at his father's grave in Powder River County at Valley View Cemetery. The VFW Honor Guard pictured included Commander Russ Kinzer, Officer of the Day/Chaplain Marty Drane, Senior Vice Commander Brad Stoddard, Jr. Vice Commander Matthew Zellers, and VFW Auxiliary Commander Annie Brimmer.
