Conservation Corner

By Powder River Conservation District

Spring has finally arrived, and it's time to get out and enjoy the sunshine! For some, it's time to load up the boat and hit the water. Others may prefer sightseeing or camping.

No matter how you enjoy the weather, remember, there are some pesky hitchhikers you need to be aware of. Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) are plants, animals, or pathogens not native to Montana and can cause harm to our environment and economy, examples include zebra mussels, Eurasian watermilfoil and whirling disease.

AIS are introduced accidentally or intentionally outside of their native range. AIS populations can reproduce quickly and spread rapidly because there are no natural predators or competitors to keep them in check.

AIS can displace native species, clog waterways, impact irrigation and power systems, degrade ecosystems, threaten recreational fishing opportunities, and cause wildlife and public health problems.

Once established, there are few, if any, means to control AIS in natural waterbodies. Control efforts are very expensive and total eradication is very unlikely. Prevention is our best defense!

To inhibit the introduction and spread of AIS, all watercraft entering Montana are required to be inspected. You must obtain an inspection before launching on Montana waters. Stop at all open Watercraft Inspection Stations (WIS).

On average, inspection times only take 5 minutes to complete. A small price to pay to protect our waterways. You can find a list of inspection stations at the following link, https://fwp .mt.gov/conservation/aquatic-invasive-species/watercraft-inspection-stations. Please help keep Montana waters safe and clean for all to enjoy.

Our local WIS team is ready to help you enjoy your warm weather plans! Stop by between 7:00 am – 7:00 pm, 7 days a week outside the Powder River Taxidermy. Call (406) 436 – 2393 to schedule an appointment.
