Broadus Track competed in one of two scheduled meets last week due to weather delays, and the meet at Laurel in which they competed was shut down early due to weather.
Montana’s fickle spring weather cut the Laurel Iron Horse track meet short last Tuesday, after a hail storm buffeted the area in the midst of the meet. Broadus Head Track Coach Jerry Coulter told us that he estimated ½” of moisture fell on the area, essentially stalling all-track related activities.
Before the weather caused delay, Broadus athletes were turning in excellent performances. Most notably, Thomas Oylear beat his own school record in the 3200 meter run, taking an astounding 19 seconds off his time to win the race in 9 minutes 51 seconds.
Eli Heacock won 1st in the 800 meter run, and when the meet was shut down the Broadus boys were in third place as a team out of ten teams in total.
For the girls, the most notable performance was the 400 meter relay team’s first place performance. That team consists of Maddie Zimmer, Mia Mader, Kiara Kelly, and Zeason Schaffer.
The meet scheduled for last Saturday at Baker was delayed due to the cold temperatures; that meet instead took place this Monday. Broadus track stars performed very well at the meet – we’ll have more info on that meet next week.
Broadus will next run at the Park City/Harlo Meet this Saturday, where they will face around 30 other teams. Coulter said many of those teams would be from our division, and give the athletes an up close look at their competition with tournaments on the horizon.
As an aside, on Sunday, Coulter received an award from the Montana Traffic Education Association for 50 years of teaching Driver’s Education.
