Broadus Track Hurdles The Competition

Broadus Tracksters competed in two meets last week with wildly different weather, representative of a typical Montana spring – on Tuesday the team attended a meet in Lockwood featuring 80 degree temps, while on Saturday a meet in Baker featured temps near freezing, with competitors bundled up in layers, even competing in heavy clothing.

Broadus Head Track Coach Jerry Coulter told us that Broadus had a number of great performances in Lockwood, which led to great team showings – the Broadus boys scored 96 points for third place, beating larger schools such as Miles City. Highlights include Baylor Kuhbacher sprinting for first place in the 200 meter with a 25.49, and Matt Hansen winning the 110 Hurdles with a 17.0. Jaxon Bilbrey won the Long Jump, flying for 19'9", and Thomas Oylear won the 3200 and 1600. Teammates Eli Heacock and Josh Rasmussen were close behind in the 1600, placing 2nd and 5th, respectively.

The girls scored 70 points as a team. Zeason Schaffer tied with Mia Mader to win the High Jump. Zeason also placed 2nd in the Long Jump with a 16'8" performance, and placed third in the Triple Jump. Mader placed 3rd in the 100, and the girls relay teams had PRs in both the 400 and 1600, placing 3rd in each event. The 400 team consists of Maddie Zimmer, Mia Mader, Kiara Kelly, and Zeason Schaffer. The 1600 team is Zeason Schaffer, Alivia Landa, Maddie Zimmer, and Mia Mader.

The meet in Baker was a more subdued affair for the Hawks, as several kids were gone for music events, and the team competed in a reduced number of events due to the quick recovery from the Lockwood Meet, to prevent overuse injuries.

Coulter said the boys performed well at the meet, putting up 47 points for 5th place with a limited number of competitors. Josh Rasmussen won the 3200, and the 1600 meter relay team took 3 seconds off their best time, placing 2nd. Matt Hansen continued to excel in the 110 Hurdles, winning 1st with a 16.89.

Thomas Oylear and Zeason Schaffer are currently the team members pre-qualified for State; Oylear has come in under the State-qualifying times in both the 1600 and 3200, while Schaffer qualified in the Long Jump.

This Tuesday the team competed in the Laurel Iron Horse, and Saturday the team goes to a meet in Baker.

Four members of the team are currently out with injuries; Coulter is hoping some of those members are able to heal up and return to the track in the coming weeks.
