Ballers Play For A Good Cause

Basketball players from the local area, along with teams from Baker, Ekalaka, Fair-view/NE MT, and other parts of MT and South Dakota played in the 5th Annual Amanda Gaskill Memorial Tournament, held over the weekend at the high school gym.

The tournament is held in memory of Amanda Gaskill, a fine young lady who passed away in a tragic accident in 2017. Proceeds from the event go towards the Amanda Gaskill Scholarship Fund, while separate events at the tournament including the Free Throw Contest and 3 point contest proceeds go to the Broadus Hot Lunch Program, to help pay for school lunches for kids who may need a little extra help.

Winners of the 3-point contest were Riley Schultz from Baker, who won a Yeti cooler, and Kevin Rust from Westby, placed second, winning a Yeti cup.

Griffin Gardner won the Free Throw Contest in the 8-12 Division, and Willow Samuelson won the 8 & Under Division.

The men's championship game ended win a score of 58-43, with the Broadus men, "Jacam" team coming out on top, over "Tankersley" from Jordan and Scobey.

The women's first championship game was won by the "Lanke" team, giving Aye Family Dentistry their first loss of the tourney. Since it was a double elimination tournament, they went on to play the second championship game against the Lanke team. The Lanke team won 40-30 to seal 1st place.

A variety of other local teams and players competed in the tournament, including: "Gee": Tayden Gee, Wyatt Gee, Dillon Gee, Ty Gee, Johnny Richards, Kashus Giacometto, Bob Hansen, Beau Rabe and Eric Swenson, "Bird": Julia Swenson, Jen Bird, Ashley Bird, Amy Riley, Alyssa Queer, Lindsey Riley, Ashley Emmons, and Laura Harrington. Other Broadus locals that played on various teams included: Seth Price, Dustin Lanke, DJ Lanke, Kenton Stradinger, Seth Bayles, Shaw LaPlant, Clay LaPlant, Lee Turnbough, Kate Copelan, Kristy Elgin, & Rheanna Schroeder. "Jacam" and "Lanke" also featured locals, and are pictured on page 8.

Hearing from some of the competitors, the tournament was a lot of fun, with teams looking forward to returning to the court next year.
