ASHLAND, Mont. - The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) would like to announce and invite the public to comment on proposals to construct a new shared-use path from Rabbittown to Ashland and new sidewalk in Ashland. The new shared-use path is part of the Ashland Rabbittown Path project and will begin at the intersection of US Highway 212 (US 212) and Rabbittown River Road, run along the north side of US 212, cross the Tongue River, and end at the Ashland School with a crosswalk. The new sidewalk is part of the US 212 Sidewalks-Ashland project and will begin on the south side of US 212 at the new crosswalk and proceed east to the Ashland Community Health Center.
The proposed work includes approximately 1.5 miles of separated shared-use path with lighting, a new pedestrian bridge across the Tongue River, and half a mile of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant sidewalk. The purpose of both projects is to enhance safety features for non-motorized users while providing a convenient connection between Rabbittown, Ashland School, and the Ashland Community Health Center.
The project is tentatively scheduled for construction in 2024, depending on the completion of all project development activities and funding availability. The project will be constructed within the existing public right-of-way; utility relocations are anticipated. MDT contacted adjacent landowners during the project inception, and MDT staff will contact adjacent landowners again before construction.
An important part of properly planning for future projects is partnering with the community. The Montana Department of Transportation welcomes the public to provide ideas and comments on the proposed project. Comments may be submitted online at http://www.mdt.mt.gov /contact/comment-form.aspx or in writing to Montana Department of Transportation, Glendive office, PO Box 890, Glendive, MT 59330-0890. Please note that comments are for Ashland Rabbittown Path project UPN 9601000 and/or the US 212 Sidewalks-Ashland project UPN 10106000.
The public is encouraged to contact Glendive District Preconstruction Engineer Jim Frank at 406-345-8214 or Project Design Engineer Thaddeus Lesnik at 406-444-9457 with questions or comments about the project.
