Broadus Elementary 3rd grade students warmed up the snowy morning on Monday, March 27th by sowing seeds. Powder River Conservation District (PRCD) staff Jessica Beagles and Liz Riter, accompanied by Corey Swenson, former Rangeland Management Specialist for the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), discussed the importance of Arbor Day and growing trees with the class.
After learning about trees and their importance, the students were asked to scarify honey locust seeds to aid in germination. This task was completed with gusto!
Once prepared, the seeds were placed in warm water to soak overnight and be ready for planting the following day. Meanwhile, the class was able to plant several zinnia seeds into the prepared yogurt cups. These skills will come in handy for planting the honey locust and other seeds this spring.
Mrs. Zellers’ 3rd grade class was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Their flowers and trees will be a welcome sight after such a long winter.
