High School Academic Olympics Teams Compete At MCC

By Jacy Collins

On March 8, 2023, the high school students participated at Miles Community College. Academic Olympics is supported by the Southeast Montana Association of School Superintendents (SEMASS) and run by educators in Southeastern Montana.

This year Mid-Rivers Communication helped with the scholarship given to the top 2 scores. SEMASS awards 2 $250 scholarships and Mid-Rivers matched that for a total of $500 given out to the 2 highest scores. There were 118 students and 21 teams in attendance for the competition. Numbers were down this year due to basketball tournaments; Broadus took two teams, with a total of 15 students.

The team consisting of Rheanna Schroeder, Alex Edwards, Emma Isaacs, Zach Jones, Archer Edwards, and Kensi Emmons placed 6th in the written test and also placed second in the oral rounds, and also received silver medals. The team of Mercy Brost, Lauryn Billing, Colton Playle, Graci Barbero, Shyla Madsen, Jayce Shroeder, Jackson Knapp and Gracie Gali placed 9th in the written test and lost out in the consolation side of the bracket.

Individual Scoring:

Seniors out of 30: Alex Edwards 3rd with bronze; Lauryn Billing 8th; Colton Playle 10th; Mercy Brost 11th; Rheanna Schroeder 13th.

Juniors out of 26: Graci Barbero 11th and Emma Isaacs 15th.

Sophomores out of 34: Archer Edwards 2nd place and silver; Zach Jones and Jackson Knapp 4th; Shyla Madsen and Jayce Schroeder 9th.

Freshman out of 28: Gracie Gali 9th, Kensi Emmons 15th.

These students gave up their lunch period for almost 6 weeks to attend this event. They did a great job of representing our school. It is great to see our students learn, grow and show off their education. Thank you to Eric Myers and Rebecca Boman for training the teams for competition.
