Getting Steps is Challenging
“I had the fewest steps ever yesterday when I worked on my income taxes,” explained a Steps for Charity team member. “The cold weather and icy walking conditions have really limited my steps, explained another. The only steps I get are in exercise class at the Senior Center each week.”
The Powder River Senior Center is also one of the charities chosen to receive funds from the Steps for Charity Challenge. The team that chose the Senior Center are the Speedsters, who are Vanna Byrd, Bert Farnes, Lula May Bruce, and Leslie Moran, sponsored by Jacam Catalyst Company, a chemical firm that contracts with Denbury in Belle Creek.
The Senior Center, under the direction of Tammy Jackman, is a social hub for many including Speedsters Bert Farnes and Lula May Bruce and is open Monday through Thursday located in the old bank building on the Broadus town square. Exercise classes including Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) and Chair Yoga offer a physical activity option each day the Center is open. Games including 500 Club, Pinochle, Hand and Foot and Bunco are also available each day of the week. Substitute players are always needed for 500 Club, which meets twice a month. A stitching and crafting group meet Tuesday mornings and this winter an Instapot cooking class was available on Thursdays. Tammy always has a jigsaw puzzle waiting to be assembled.
The Powder River Food Bank shares space in the Senior Center, providing food for Powder River County residents. Each month a box of food that includes pasta and soups is available.
People can also choose canned foods from the pantry, and eggs, venison and beef are available to any and all Powder River County residents.
The Powder River Senior Center and Food Bank are vitally important to Powder River County, and it’s great to recognize them through the Steps for Charity Challenge.
