Hawk Wrestlers Pin Down The Competition

The Hawk wrestlers competed in three separate competitions over the course of five days last week, as their regular season winds its way toward its terminus, following this upcoming weekend in Hardin.

Last Tuesday the Hawks wrestled at Baker, facing competitors from Glendive, Baker, and some Miles City wrestlers. On Thursday, Broadus hosted their home mixer, teams from across Eastern Montana as the Hawks brought out their new second set of mats. This allowed nearly constant action as one or both mats had wrestlers duking it out at any given time, and viewers were also able to watch girls wrestle in their respective competitions. Then on Friday, Broadus traveled to Moorcroft, Wy-oming.

Broadus Coach Frankie Schoonover noted that perhaps the pressure of the competitions was more favorable than huge meets such as the Miles City Cowboy, as the Hawks performed well all week.

"As a team, we dictated the matches at Baker," Schoonover noted. "It was good to see a push in the right direction."

Results from the meet were not available, as they had not been kept on the Track Wrestling page.

On Thursday at Broadus, the hometown crowd cheered on the team as 8th grader AJ Schoenbeck led off the night for the Hawks with a win against Jayden Dominque of Wolf Point, in the 103 lb weight class. AJ weighs in at 91 lbs, so he's giving up double digit body weight percentages compared to some of his competitors, and placed 2nd in his weight class.

Kail Irish, at 132, wrestled a tough match against state placer Ty Borge of Colstrip, going into the third round. Irish placed 3rd.

Riggin Schaffer placed 1st in his 145 bracket, finding out that dropping down in weight has really helped him out in winning.

Logan Capp, a strong, coachable 8th grader, placed 5th at 145.

Colton Playle placed 4th at 152.

8th grader Collin Weatherall won two matches on the night to place 1st in his bracket. "He opened up and wrestled well," Schoonover commented.

Jon Wood, wrestling at 205, placed 5th. Schoonover said that over the course of the weekend Wood was able to use a move they practiced, showing progress from a coach's perspective.

Reuben Kinzer at 205 won his matches to place 1st.

At Moorcroft, Riggin Schaffer was the only Hawk to place, taking 7th, while Kail Irish and Reuben Kinzer came within a win of placing.

"Riggin wrestled better than I've ever seen," Schoonover said. He continued: "Riggin is learning how to deal with losses and come back. Kail had a tough class and saw Borge again, but Kail is figuring out those guys are human and he is doing better all the time. Reuben displayed natural athleticism and sportsmanship in Moorcroft. He wrestled a kid who has never won a match, and instead of overpowering him Reuben wrestled with him, using his awareness and strategy to think ahead. For a freshman that's great to see, and tells me the Broadus AAU program prepared him well for high school."

This Thursday Broadus hosts Miles City for an AAU dual, followed by a high school dual, with action beginning at 6 PM. On Friday Broadus hosts Sidney for a high school dual. Additionally, the Broadus AAU Wrestling Club will be offering raffle tickets at the duals for 1/4s of beef, to be raffled off March 4th. Tickets are $20 a piece.
