The Broadus varsity boys maintained their undefeated conference record over the weekend as they beat Wibaux and Ekalaka, along with a non-conference win against St. Labre last week.
"We've done a better job recently playing the percentages," Coach Dustin Lanke said of the wins, as we spoke to him Monday.
"We're ok at shooting threes, but where we've been really good is under the basket," Lanke added.
He described how the team has been doing a better job taking shots where they had a higher percentage chance of sinking the shot, versus three-pointers and other harder to hit shots which had been more likely earlier in the year.
How that was shown on the court is effective field goal percentages over of 60% or more in the previous three games, with a shooting percentage of 72% against Ekalaka. This style of play makes for a more efficient offense, putting up more points on average each time down the court and also providing a nice experience for fans, as watching their team score is always more fun than watching them miss.
Lanke noted that in their game against St. Labre, the Hawks' played into the Braves' game plan early and turned the ball over too many times, with 20 turnovers in the game. Lanke knew St. Labre didn't have an answer for Dillon Gee's skills under the hoop, so as soon as Dillon started firing on all cylinders, Broadus kept the lead in an exciting game, which Broadus won 82-64.
The next time Broadus faces St. Labre, this weekend, St. Labre will feature a pair of transfer students including former Broadus player Tytan Hanson, who are expected to provide a more challenging game.
At Wibaux on Friday, Paysen Kuhbacher returned to the game after a concussion injury. Broadus scored 46 points in the paint along with 3 of 9 from three- point land to win handily 72-39. The Hawks scored 1.09 points per possession in the win, with 27 points coming off turnovers. Dillon Gee had 31 points and 8 rebounds in the win, while Marcus Mader had 24 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 steals.
On Saturday, Broadus returned to the Hawk Quonset to face Carter County's Bulldogs, with all 10 of the Hawk players scoring.
In the fourth quarter with the Hawk starters on the bench, Lanke noted that the remaining Broadus players needed to remain disciplined as they turned the ball over a number of times, and Ekalaka made 17 points in the fourth, as Broadus won 70-32.
Broadus now goes out on the road for the next two weekends as they travel to Ashland this Friday to play at St. Labre, then Plevna on Saturday. Next week it's games at Jordan and Melstone, with Melstone being a major focus (though winning against the other teams is important for conference standings). The Broncs beat previously undefeated Harlotown on Saturday by 27 points, and are steadily improving throughout the season, according to Lanke.
