Superintendent's Report

By Broadus Schools Superintendent Jim Hansen

Since most of Powder River County residents will be examining their tax bill shortly, I thought it would be appropriate to discuss the school district’s budget. The table below denotes the number of mills levied this year compared to ten years ago.

2012-13 2022-23

Broadus Elementary 96.41 66.20

Powder River High School 74.76 49.73

Total Mills 171.17 115.93

There are many factors that determine the makeup of your final school tax bill. For example, the District has utilized a portion of the Federal COVID funds to reduce the mill levy, and allocated the savings to your building reserve fund for future maintenance of facilities. The Federal COVID funds will expire in 2024. Unfortunately, some schools allocated this revenue for operational expenses, and according to some recent educational articles many school districts may encounter financial difficulties in the 2024-25 school year.

Our mission is to provide a sound education to the youth of Powder River County. We provide a public service to “all” youth who come through our doors, while simultaneously being conscious of the financial ramifications. Taxpayers should be proud of the financial decisions your school board has made while maintaining a quality education for the youth of Powder River County.
